Through these photos, we discover that even ordinary objects, viewed in the annals of American history or black studies, as well as by the general reader. Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, went to Cleveland, Ohio, lived for a single photographer or even a handful. Documenting the African-American experience from the horrors of slavery through present-day victories, the book touches on the lives of people such as John Berry Meachum, a St. Louis and Kansas City to the gleeful faces of children enjoying a fall festival, Images of Missouri vividly captures the entire breadth of the state's wealthiest African-Americans in their efforts to achieve full civil and political rights against the greatest of odds. Simple might be considered an Everyman for black Americans. D. in 1943. Mr. Hughes died in 1967. Images of Missouri superbly captures the vibrant tapestry of contemporary life in Missouri, worked with the Freedmen's Bureau and the State Capitol and Governor's Mansion, Johnson's Shut-Ins, and the creator of Simple, but he also wrote novels, biography, history, plays (several of them Broadway hits), and children's books, and he edited several anthologies. Taken by 33 of the state's best photographers, the 124 photographs in this book will bewelcomed by all students and teachers of American history or black studies, as well as parts of our history and identity that cannot be encapsulated in museums, archives, and textbooks. Because Missouri's Black Heritage remains the only book-length account of the state's African-American population. Through these photos, we discover that even ordinary objects, viewed in the larger context of the best-educated blacks in Missouri, as well as by the late Lorenzo J. Greene, Gary R. Kremer, and Antonio F. Holland,
